The 8.000 square kilometer ice-cap of Vatnajökull glacier and a vast area around is the Vatnajökull National Park which was established since 2008. The Skaftafell region and the Jökulsárgljúfur region are also part of the park. The beauty and the ruggedness of this majestic area are just beyond compare.
The phenomenal vastness of Vatnjökull National Park
The video highlights the fact that Iceland and the Vatnajökull national park is free of light pollution. This opens up a new dimension of beauty and potential experience. Iceland and especially remote areas are one of the few places in the world where you can still see the milky way.
An amazing display of the night sky
During clear nights in dark winter, you can potentially see an amazing display of northern lights, the moon and a multitude of stars. A brand new video created by the ‘Friends of Vatnajökul‘ captures this perfectly. This is a non-profit organization that supports research and promotion of the national park.
A feast for the eyes
The video takes the viewer on a tour of the park. It has great scenes from mountains such as Krístinartindar, Hvannadalshnjúkur, and Hrútfjallstindar peaks. The outlet glaciers Svínafellsjökull, Skeiðarárjökull, and Breiðamerkurjökull are in the video in all their glory. The timeless beauty of the horseshoe-shaped Ásbyrgi and Vesturdalur valley and Hljóðaklettar is shown as well. Dettifoss waterfall, Ófærufoss waterfall, and Svartifoss waterfalls are in the video. Note that Ásbyrgi, Dettifoss waterfall is far in the north while the Svartifoss waterfall is on the south side of Vatnajökull glacier. This demonstrates the vastness of the national park.
Bucket list places in Vatnajökull national park video
If you are into glacial lagoons you will love this video. The glacial lagoons Jökulsárlón and Heinabergslón are there in their full glory. Lake Langisjór in the east of Iceland also makes an appearance. This is and the incredible Múlagljúfur canyon which is definitely on my bucket list. There are a lot of other beautiful bucket list-worthy places in the video. Just watch and see.
