There is an incredible variety of extreme sports in Iceland. Surfers brave the wild and frigid waves of the north Atlantic ocean underneath shimmering northern lights.

Paragliding is a surpringsly popular sport. You sometimes see paragliders soar above Mt. Úlfarsfell, Mt. Esja or near the airstrip at Sandskeið.

Iceland has one major river for river rafting, Austari Jökulsá (Eastern Glacial River). There so many caves in Iceland´s numerous lava field and spelunking has become increasingly popular.

But perhaps Iceland is best known for sports and activites in the highlands and on its glaciers. Hiking across the remote and rugged highlands is a popular. So is mountain climbing, snowboarding and of course snowmobiling on glaciers.
